Ukraine to use underground storages more actively if gas transit drops

The necessity of the use of the underground gas storages in Ukraine will increase in case of the drop of the gas transit through the Ukrainian gas transporting system or its absence as Interfax-Ukraine citing Head of Ukrtransgaz Serhiy Pereloma.

“The Ukrainian underground gas storages from the point of view of transit are the equilibrating mechanism. If there is no transit, they are similar to the rechargeable battery that can store and give, when it is necessary. The necessity in the storages will not disappear in case of transit drop, their importance will increase,” Pereloma noted.

He assured that the underground gas storages will not be empty as Ukraine is going to large stockpiles of gas for guarantee of coming through the heating season and stable supply of the Ukrainian consumers.

At the moment, the operator of the underground gas storages develops different scenarios of its work and can easily adjust to the proper work of the operator of the gas transporting system of Ukraine.

Earlier, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Naftogaz-Ukraine company Yuriy Vitrenko stated that Ukraine has no intention to change its gas transit strategy, and it will insist that the launch of Nord Stream 2 pipeline is unacceptable

Besides, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is ready to continue transporting gas through Ukraine after 2024. However, the Russian authorities need to understand how long the transit will be extended and in what volumes.

The end of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the waters of Germany by Fortuna pipe-laying ship is planned for September 12. Besides, the Russian company Gazprom has stated that the first line of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is almost ready for launch.

Gazprom Head Alexei Miller stated that the first supplies on the Nord Stream 2 can be held in the heating season of 2021.
