Ukraine will file a comprehensive lawsuit to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the coming weeks concerning the Ukrainian political prisoners illegally kept in Russian Federation. It was not filed earlier as Ukraine wanted to settle this issue in a diplomatic way, as Pavlo Petrenko, Ukraine’s Justice Minister, said, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“In the coming weeks another comprehensive lawsuit on all the political prisoners will be filed to the European Court of Human Rights,” Petrenko said.
Answering the question when exactly the lawsuit will be filed, as earlier, it was reported that it would be done at the beginning of June-July, the Minister explained:
“We postponed the commencement of an action, hoping that we could come to an agreement concerning the return of the Ukrainians to Ukraine in a diplomatic way…but we realize that each day these chances get lower, as the state-aggressor and its authority treats the Ukrainian prisoners completely cynically”.
According to him, after the final consultations with the Foreign Ministry the lawsuit will be filed. It will be about “the prosecution of the Ukrainians by the Russian Federation under the nationality and the fact that no justice is applied to these citizens”.
‘’The lawsuit is completed, the decision is left to be made not to harm those Ukrainians in the Ukrainian prisons,” Petrenko added.
It should be noted that it is the 6th lawsuit which Ukraine files against Russia. Two of them concern Crimea’s annexation and the violation of the human rights on the peninsula, two more – the violations in Donbas. Another lawsuit concerns the transport of a group of children to Russia from Donbas.
