Poland and Ukraine will sign the framework document, which determines basic directions of implementation of the language-related article of the education law, recently apporved by the Ukrainian parliament. This will concern the Ukrainian schools with Polish language of tuition. Such agreement was made during the meeting of Ukraine’s education minister Liliya Hrynevych and her Polish counterpart Anna Zalewska.
According to Ukraine’s minister, her agency gradually will increase the share of school disciplines taught in Ukrainian language – up to 60 percent in the secondary school.
Polish side, in its turn, adopted a general plan for the implementation of Article 7 (linguistic), but ambiguous wording aroused doubts.
"We understand the importance for Ukraine to strengthen Ukrainian language as a state language, in Poland we also pay much attention to the development of our language, but we have bilateral agreements. Paragraph 4 of Article 7 of the law says that some subjects can be studied in the languages of the European Union. But the word “can” is not a guarantee, there must be a guarantee that a certain part of the subjects will be studied in Polish, "Minister of National Education of Poland said.
Hrynevych assured that the situation will be regulated in the law "On general secondary education" and in the acts of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in more detail.
At the moment, the parties are working on the text of the declaration, which will be signed in the near future.
