Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba believes that if Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is implemented, Ukraine needs security guarantees that will include withdrawal of the militants from its territory as Interfax-Ukraine reported.
“If the issue is “pressed in”, then, of course, Nord Stream 2 for Ukraine is first of all the security issue. It should not be simplified up to 3 billion of money for transit, however; it is lots of money. We are the state that exists in the safety vacuum, that is why we tell: “you withdraw one lever of deterrence of Russia – give us an alternative, give us the security guarantee in one or another form,” Kuleba said.
According to him, the withdrawal of the militants from Donbas, de-occupation of Ukrainian territories can be such a guarantee.
At the same time, the minister told that when Ukraine raised this issue, its partners were not ready for it.
Earlier, Dmytro Kuleba stated that Ukraine is ready to negotiate compensation for the loss of cash proceeds from gas transit after the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
On June 4, President of Russia Vladimir Putin has stated that the laying of the first line of the Nord Stream 2 was finished.
Meanwhile, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert stated that it is extremely important for Berlin to maintain Ukraine's status as a gas transit country even after Nord Stream 2 is put into operation.
