Ukraine celebrates the Infantry Day on May 6, 2019 for the first time in its history. The president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko established this day in a decree from April 19.

Poroshenko congratulated the infantry soldiers on the website of the Presidential Administration:

“Today, for the first time on a state level we congratulate the real “workmen” of the war - Ukrainian infantrymen. It is they, who constitute the basis of might of the Ukraine’s Land Forces and the glory of Ukrainian army. It is they, who are hardened in battles with the Russian aggressor, who demonstrate daily resilience, invincible character and courage, proving there is no such force that can take down their will for victory. It is the infantry that bears the greatest burden of the war, and infantry soldiers bear the heaviest burden of hostilities and military life.”

The head of state also thanked the infantrymen for service.

Numerous examples of courage and heroism displayed by you in the battles in the east of the country, have already become an example of loyalty and service to the Motherland,” Nayev wrote.

The Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak also addressed the infantrymen:

“This year Ukraine for the first time celebrates the professional holiday of infantrymen - people who devoted themselves to the service in the oldest and most numerous troops! The Ukrainian infantry heroically, worthily, courageously and resolutely performs the most complex combat missions in the Joint Forces Operation. I wish all the infantrymen and their families, good health, endurance, invincible power of will and spirit, Peace and Victory in Ukraine’s name! Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
