Over the past four years after Maidan, Ukraine succeeded much more in strengthening national identity, reforms, which led to economic growth, than over the past couple of decades, as the U.S. Special Representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker said in an interview for Pryamy.
“I think that this is that important prospective which should be preserved and noticed. I know that the Ukrainians can’ wait for the state to develop. And the reasons for this are clear. This should be this way. People should demand more!” Volker believes.
He also noted that there are lots of problems in Ukraine – many reforms have been not implemented, others require improvement.
“But if to look at a full picture, it to come back to 1991, at the times of restoration of Ukraine’s independence, and then look at 2001, 2011 – it is 20 years of the state’s history. So, concerning the strengthening of reforms which have already caused economic growth, over the past four years after Maidan, much more work has been done in these sectors compared with all the previous decades,” the American diplomat said.
Volker also stressed that the Ukrainians had to demand more.
“Ukraine has to be rich, Ukraine has to be honest, fair and predictable country… People have a right to demand that. But if we look at Ukraine’s history, this state is finally moving in the right direction,” he added.
Earlier, Volker claimed that the U.S. main goals in Ukraine were the restoration of the territorial integrity and security assurance.
