Ukraine introduces biometric control for foreigners entering the country

The new system of recording a biometric data of foreign citizens starts working at 157 border checkpoints on Jan. 1, 2018, as the Interior Ministry of Ukraine wrote on Facebook.

Starting today, citizens of 71 countries including Russia will have to give 5 fingerprints for identification when entering Ukraine as well as send a notice of their intention to enter the country in advance, specifying an aim of a trip.

“We will cover all the stationary checkpoints, while later on - small checkpoints of local importance. These databases allow us to enter ten countries with the best verification of those who cross the border. Even now Ukraine is in top-10 countries by the number of inquiries and responses with the bases of the Interpol. This will give us a higher guarantee that individuals with criminal intentions won’t enter our country,” Interior Minister Avakov noted.

It’s also noted that the checkpoints bordering with Donbas conflict zone won’t have biometric control systems, our citizens from Russia won’t be able to cross the border if they’re coming from the occupied territory.

The State Border Guard Service also noted that citizens of Ukraine who live in the occupied by Russia Crimea would not need to go through the biometric control.
