The Cabinet of Ministers excluded the means from the draft law of Ukraine “On 2019 state budget” provided for the funding of the program “Ukraine’s drinking water” adopted in 2011, as Ukrvodokanal, Ukraine's state water supply association, reported on Facebook.
“The law provided funding of this program amounting $107,1 million from the state budget. Unfortunately, only $7,4 million was allocated over the past years,” the message says.
The water utilities report that the deterioration of nets, constructions, and equipment of water supply and draining systems in Ukraine is more than 50%, the number of breakdowns and water losses has increased dramatically as of today.
The situation is worsened by the fact that around $89,2 million was not compensated for the enterprises of the sector. Besides, prices for electricity, reagents, has increased, taxes almost doubled.
The message says that the sum requires to reconstruct the water supply and draining enterprises is around $40 billion.
“If we don’t take immediate measures to support a complex water supply and sanitation sector, central water supply and draining might be under threat in Ukraine in the nearest future,” the association reports.
It was noted that Ukrvodokanal sent an official letter to Parliament’s Speaker Andriy Parubiy and MPs on the behalf of all the water utilities. It asks to prevent the collapse of the plumbing industry and initiate introduction of necessary changes to Ukraine’s draft law on "2019 State budget."
Earlier, it was reported that Crimea lacks drinking water.
