On May 16, Ukraine celebrates Vyshyvanka Day, the holiday, which was established 13 years ago. It was founded, as it is considered, by student of Chernivtsi National University Lesia Voronyuk. Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated annually, each third Thursday of May.
Traditionally, on this day it is possible to observe a lot of people wearing Vyshyvanka at the streets of the Ukrainian cities, in public transport and places. Thus, the Ukrainians pay tribute to their national costume.
The current president congratulated the Ukrainians on the holiday in the morning. Petro Poroshenko noted that today, Vyshyvanka is the unchanged symbol of Ukraine not only inside the country but also out of it.
“While the secrecy of the skill of the Ukrainian embroidery from generation to generation by mothers to their daughters, Ukraine will continue to live! In our embroidered shirt is joy and sorrow, hope and power, which historically accompany each Ukrainian. Wearing our national dress, we prove once more that love lives in our hearts,” the president said.
President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky also published his photo in the national costume, urged everyone not to forget to congratulate other people on this holiday”. “I did not forget to wear vyshyvanka but forgot to shave!”, the future president joked.
Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman published the number of photos in vyshyvanka and stated that he is “proud to be a Ukrainian”.
“The embroidered shirt is special for us; it is a symbol of the Ukrainian identity, love to our country,” he added.
Moreover, the prime minister had time to take photos with the Ukrainian at one of Kyiv embankments.
There are also many people wearing vyshyvanka in the Verkhovna Rada, which works in the plenary regime. Many MPs came here in the national costumes and boasted of it on the social networks.
The number of the events will take place in the regions: concerts, vyshyvanka parades, patriotic flash mobs.
According to 112 Ukraine correspondent in Lviv, the antique statues are already wearing vyshyvanka. Such event takes place annually. Besides, it is planned to create the big map of Ukraine, which will show the typical features of vyshyvanka of different regions of Ukraine.
The mini-sculptures of project Shukai (Search) were decorated with vyshyvanka in Kyiv as the organizers reported on Facebook.
The downtown of Odesa also prepares for the celebration of Vyshyvanka Day.
