Ukraine submitted an application for the protection of sovereign interests of the state to the Arbitration Tribunal according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) because of Kerch Bridge constructed by Russia. Iryna Lutsenko, the President’s Representative to the Parliament, MP from Petro Poroshenko Block, said it at the session of the Parliament’s Coordination Board.

“On the order of the Head of the state, in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea Ukraine submitted an application for the protection of Ukraine (because of Russia’s Kerch Bridge, - ed.),” Iryna Lutsenko stated.
She added that this issue would be considered by the end of 2018.
“We are expecting the results in 2019,” the President’s Representative to the Parliament noted.
As it was reported earlier, President of Russia Vladimir Putin has opened a vehicle part of the bridge over the Kerch Strait that unites annexed Crimea and Krasnodar Krai. Putin at the wheel of Kamaz headed the convoy of the vehicles and cargo equipment that made the first trip over the bridge. The automobile traffic over the bridge was opened prematurely at 5:30 am, on May 16 (Moscow time).
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered to sue Russia for the ecological damage brought by the construction of the bridge over Kerch strait in occupied Crimea.
U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch expressed confidence that the ongoing construction of the bridge over Kerch Strait could vastly interfere with Ukraine’s transport connection with international markets.
The U.S. government has condemned the construction and opening of the Kerch Strait Bridge.
The Ministry of Infrastructure estimates the direct damages from the construction of Kerch Bridge at around $19,2 million.
