Ukraine and Poland called on the European Commission to reconsider the decision to expand the access of "Gazprom" to OPAL gas line. This was claimed in a joint statement by the presidents of Poland and Ukraine, adopted in Warsaw on December 2.
The statement said that the EC decision on the OPAL pipeline undermines the strategy of EU energy security, creates a threat for the energy security of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which are dependent on gas supplies from a single source, and will prevent the creation of an effective Energy Union in Europe. In addition, it is noted that it creates real risks for continuous gas supplies between Poland and Ukraine, and significant redirection of gas flows between other countries.
"We believe that this decision should be reconsidered, while recognizing what a difficult and painful step it may be,” the statement says.
The Presidents noted that the EC decision is contrary to the sanctions policy of the EU, since it stimulates additional cash flows in the Russian Federation, at the same time limiting the Ukrainian revenues from gas transit.
Earlier it was reported that European Commission expanded Gazprom's access to OPAL gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine.
