Two military sappers died, five more military personnel of the Armed Forces were injured on the territory of the Balakliya central artillery base, Kharkiv region, northeastern Ukraine. General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine reported so on Facebook.
“An emergency occurred on the technical territory of the central artillery support base; two sapper servicemen were killed, five servicemen-sappers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were injured – one was in critical condition; another sustained moderately serious injuries; another three were moderately wounded. Injured military are provided with professional emergency medical assistance," reads the message.
As we reported earlier, the explosions took place near the Balakliya ammunition depot. Head of Communication Department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Bohdan Senyk stated that the planned works of the deminers on the clearance of the territory take place.
As we reported, a series of powerful blasts took place at an ammunition storage facility in Kharkiv region on late March 23, 2017. The incident occurred near the town of Balakliya. Many of the locals were evacuated from the town and its vicinities. The fire caused by the blasts was finally extinguished the day after that, by the evening of March 24. Numerous casualties and even a fatality were reported.
On May 3, 2018, the fire occurred in the Balakliya armament depot. According to the Defense Ministry, the fire tank ran over some explosive device during the execution of the technical works.
According to the press service of the General Staff of Ukraine, the dry grass caught fire at the former technical territory of the 65th arsenal in Balakliya. The works on the cleaning and demining of the armaments' debris that did not explode during the previous fire took place and the new fire has begun.
