The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has apologized for having triggered the high expectations of Ukrainians when he said that the Anti-Terrorist Operation in Donbas would last hours, not months. He said this on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel during the solemn ceremony of raising the Flag of Ukraine in Dnipro city.
“Over four years ago I claimed that the Anti-Terrorist Operation would last hours, and not months. And the context of these words or their figurativeness is not so important now. The people saw it as an opportunity to end the war quickly. I regret having triggered high expectations. I am truly sorry to have given the hope that did not come true. It is a pity that I have given a promise that did not realize. And for that, I apologize. For me it’s a serious lesson of careful and responsible attitude to my words and promises,” he said.
According to the president, for today Ukraine’s task is to build a strong army capable of defending not only Donbas, but also the border with Russian Federation and gain international support that “restrains the aggressor.”
As it was reported earlier, Ukraine celebrates the national holiday - National Flag Day on August 23.
In 1848 a yellow and blue banner was adopted by the Main Ruthenian Council in Lemberg (Lviv, Western Ukraine), the capital of the then Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, and flew over the city's magistrate for the first time. The flag was indeed yellow and blue, it was later changed upside down to blue and yellow to be more appealing to the common person.
