On Sunday 9, US Secretary of State Rex Tillersom is coming to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
“Pursuant to the agreements between the President of the United States and the President of Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will make a visit to Ukraine on July 9. President Petro Poroshenko will have a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State in Kyiv to discuss the enhancement of strategic partnership between Ukraine and USA and further coordination of efforts aimed at countering Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Ukrainian President’s press service informed earlier.
The U.S. department of State said that on his visit to Kyiv Tillerson will “reaffirm America’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while encouraging the Government of Ukraine to continue implementing reforms that will strengthen Ukraine’s economic, political, and military resilience”.
According to Interfax-Ukraine, no documents are to be signed during the visit, but both sides are working on certain agreements that may be signed later, during the visit of US government officials to Ukraine.
Kyiv is taking the news of the appointment well, as Kurt Volker understands Ukraine’s affairs.
It is expected that Volker will represent the USA in negotiations on regulating the situation in Donbas, and he may be involved in Minsk agreement process.
The US Department of State has already said that at the moment Tillerson is collecting information and forming his own opinion on how to solve the crisis in Ukraine. He may give specific suggestions on US involvement in regulating the crisis during his visit.
Another reason why this visit is important for Ukraine is that the US Secretary of State is coming to Ukraine right after G20 summit, where he talked to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Ukrainian crisis was also discussed by US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, so Kyiv needs to hear what the US Department of State thinks.
As we reported earlier, during his visit, Tillerson is to meet Poroshenko and local young reformers.
