The worst measles outbreak is observed in Kyiv over the years of Ukraine’s independence. Only active position of people toward vaccination may secure the capital as Head of Health Security Department Valentyna Ginzburg reported.
Thus, during six months of 2019, over 5,000, including almost 3,000 adults, sickened with measles. The Kyiv State City Administration noted that it is twice more than the previous year. About 50% of ill people needed the hospitalization due to the heavy type of disease.
This year two adults died from the measles as they were not vaccinated and came to the doctors when it was too late.
“It is a real threat, which might be counteracted only by a responsible approach to the vaccination. The issue is about the personal responsibility of each person. Today, nothing but vaccination may protect Kyiv from the outbreaks and epidemics of the vaccine-controlled infectious diseases,” Ginzburg emphasized.
According to the experts, a great number of children in age up to 5-years-old and from 7 up to 14-years-old did not get the scheduled vaccination,” Ginzburg emphasized.
“They are children who return from the summer vacation from all parts of the country, they will go to the kindergartens and schools in September and we will have a new wave. And not only measles. Now, unfortunately, the growth of incidence with other dangerous diseases, for example, diphtheria is possible,” the message said.
The department states that all conditions are created in Kyiv for people to be vaccinated freely and without queues. Over 57,000 doses of vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella are present in public medical establishments. It allows to vaccine all children according to the schedule and vaccinates the adults.
Earlier, the UN reported that 70 percent of all measles cases in Europe are observed in Ukraine.
Besides, all adults will get the vaccines against measles for free. Acting Healthcare Minister Ulyana Suprun reported that another 780,000 vaccines against measles will be bought by Ukraine in 2019.
