Swedish military to assist in creation of Mine Action Center in Ukraine’s Chernihiv

Ukrainian and Swedish specialists have discussed the creation of the Mine Action Center during the meeting at the 8th training center of the State Special Transport Service of Ukraine as the center reported on Facebook.

“The Swedish specialists within the inter-state cooperation have discussed the issue on the provision of expert help in the creation of the Mine Action Center at funds of the State Special Transport Service under the overall coordination of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine,” the message said.

The State Special Transport Service has presented the project of the structure of the Mine Action Center, as well as held familiarization with training and material base of training of sappers and sapper divers. In their turn, the foreign colleagues offered to involve the representatives of the State Special Transport Service to the Swedish national drills on mine action SEE-21 and the joint Swedish-Ukrainian seminar.

It is noted that the bilateral cooperation in the mine clearance sphere between Sweden and Ukraine continues from the last year. The foreign specialists provide substantial assistance on mine clearance.

Particularly, during the combat actions, near 7,000 square km of the controlled territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions are contaminated with mines and explosive items. The detachments of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine, the Emergency State Service, non-governmental organizations and the State Special Transport Service are involved in the mine clearance.

The sappers of the service have inspected over 1,000 km of railway, almost 775 hectares of adjacent areas, where 8,368 explosive items were found and defused.

Earlier, Vice Prime Minister - Minister for the Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Oleksiy Reznikov believes that mine clearance in Donbas may take 25 to 30 years, because the density of explosives on the territory of Ukraine is greater than anywhere else in the world.
