Sushchenko's case: prosecution demands 14 years of imprisonment

The prosecution asked Moscow City Court to sentence Roman Sushchenko, an illegally detained Ukrainian journalist, to 14 years, as Mark Feygin, his lawyer, wrote on Twitter.

“The prosecution asked 14 years of imprisonment for Roman Sushchenko,” he informed.

Today, Moscow City Court held a session on this case. According to Feygin, the sentence will be announced on July 4.

Within the debates, the prosecutor stated that he considers the quilt of the accused proved and asked the court to sentence him to 14 years of imprisonment. The defense insisted on Sushchenko’s innocence who, according to the lawyer, was a victim of provocations.

“In his last plea Sushchenko stated that he did not admit his quilt, he does not agree with the accusations, and that he believes that everything that happened to him was a planned provocation of Russian special service and asks the court to acquit him,” Mark Feygin, the lawyer, told Interfax.

The lawyer explained that Sushchenko, who lived in France for six years, being a Ukrinform correspondent in Paris, has visited Russia multiple times, and during the detention he was there for his own reasons, He has relatives in Russia.

Ukrainian Roman Sushchenko, the reporter of Ukrinfiorm news agency, was detained in September 2016 in Moscow, and accused by the FSB of espionage. For this he faces 20 years in prison. Ukraine has appealed to Russia with a demand to release the Ukrainian journalist multiple times.
