Members of the International Editorial Board of NewsOne TV channel responded to the pressure from the side of the radicals on the workers of the channel. We provide the full text of the statement:
“We, the members of the International Editorial Board of NewsOne TV channel, strongly condemn the fact of the unprecedented pressure from the side of the far-right radicals and intimidation of the journalists of the TV channel due to the fulfillment of the professional duties by them. Ukraine is for a long time, unfortunately, among the world leaders in the case of the violation against the mass media workers, obstruction of their activity. But the current situation raises particular outrage even amid this disappointing background.
The freedom of speech and respect of the rights of the journalists is one of the basic values in the European Union and one of the clear criteria of the definition of the readiness of Ukraine to the Euro-integration, which is enshrined in the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine.
Besides, the spread perceptions in Europe is the belief that the social responsibility of the mass media is the conscious participation in the promotion of the culture of peace, dialogue and tolerance. Ukraine-Russia telecast announced by NewsOne with the participation of common citizens of two countries completely correspond to this European tradition. Especially, the concern is raised as the telecast was disrupted by blatant pressure from the side of those public movements and semi-militarized organizations, which defined as extremist and even neo-Nazi in the reports of many international human rights organizations.
Amid it, the astonishment is raised due to the absence of the reaction to such actions of the radicals from the Ukrainian law enforcement bodies and leadership of Ukraine. Instead of supporting the efforts, which aim to find the ways to settle the conflict in Donbas, newly elected president of Ukraine actually closed eyes for putting pressure and intimidation of NewsOne channel and journalists, who promoted the proper efforts. We hope these facts will become the matter of the careful consideration and proper response from the side of the EU institutes and countries-members of the Normandy Format particularly".
