Taras Shevchenko wrote a little ballad telling about three Cossacks fell in love with Kateryna. Kateryna entrusts her choice to destiny: she promised to become a wife of the one who can free her brother from the captivity. Two of the Cossacks died trying to fulfill of agreement and the third one succeeded in saving her brother. But it turned out that this person was not Kateryna’s brother, but her lover. The end of the ballad is moved away for a long time – Kateryna will have to wait several centuries growing old and not losing hope. This tale as a parable traverses the history of Ukraine, reproduces its grammatic and heroic episodes. Each test destroys Kateryna’s house. But she persistently, as hundreds of generations of Ukrainians, rebuilds it against and again.

The age of Ukrainian khata (house) – from war to war. If it wasn’t’ for toloka (toloka is a one-time free of charge work which is done urgently. It is an old Ukrainian custom, a form of cooperation between farmers), there would not be a place to meet your beloved.
