The Bundestag is shocked by the decision of President Volodymyr Zelensky on the closure of 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZiK TV channels as member of the Bundestag Robby Schlund stated.
He underlined that such a decision harms the democratic processes in the country.
“Initially, I did not believe it (what is happening); however, I was shocked and extremely distracted that it is even possible in Ukraine and to this day, I consider Mr. Zelensky smart and popular president who being a comedian (humorist) should understand how diversity and pluralism of opinion are important. The revolting critics damage the democratic processes and it provides me bad news; while we have a lot to do these days,” Schlund noted.
The member of the Bundestag underlined that Germany, the UK, or any other western countries ‘have ‘for fun’ grounds for some justifications or particular processes’.
“For fun with a clear opinion about democracy hardly to be ready or it will be properly used. It seems to me that it is inappropriate for Ukraine right now. If you believe that Ukraine is a pro-Western country, I believe it is a trick because I can tell them about it and they would not find any democracy in it…Now, I am really concern about my contacts, my interests in Ukraine or other Eastern countries that something similar happened there. As of today, it is very said. I hope that soon all discussions that exist and different opinions will be solved in Ukraine. Things that happen and we observed will resolve fine,” the politician added.
On February 2, Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on sanctions against 112 Ukraine, NewsONE and ZiK TV channels. By this decree, he enforced the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on sanctions on the cancellation of the broadcasting licenses of the TV channels belonging to Taras Kozak (112 Ukraine, NewsOne, ZIK). According to the decree that is eligible since the moment of signature, the TV channels faced sanctions that will be active for five years. These sanctions make the broadcasting impossible.
Earlier, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine demands to close YouTube pages of 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK TV channels.
At the same time, Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Dmytro Razumkov said that sanctions against TV channels are always bad.
