The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) counterintelligence blocked the smuggling of metallic mercury from Transcarpathia to the EU. The substance could be used for mass chemical attacks, the press service SBU reports.

The attacker was exposed in an attempt to transport three kilograms of mercury. The substance was to be transported by a citizen of one of the European countries for 5 thousand euros. Abroad, a customer was waiting for the courier, to whom he planned to sell dangerous goods for 200,000 euros.

The malefactor was detained at the Mali Selmentsi checkpoint. When inspecting his personal belongings, law enforcement officers found hidden containers with mercury. In the framework of criminal proceedings initiated by investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine under Part 1 of Art. 201 (smuggling) of the Criminal code of Ukraine, the detainee is suspected," the message reads.

Investigative actions continue.

The SBU also noted that mercury is a highly toxic chemical the vapors of which are highly toxic and can cause serious poisoning or death. The dangerous substance can be used to carry out terrorist attacks.

As it was reported earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has exposed a corrupt mechanism of embezzlement of budget funds during the repair of Ukrainian armored vehicles by the management of one of the state-owned enterprises, affiliated with Ukroboronprom, the SBU press service reports.
