Deploying a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas would be the best way of protecting Russian-speaking people there, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine said in the framework of the Munich Security Conference at the Ukrainian Lunch.

Kurt Volker says that it’s “hot war” in Donbas now and the issue is urgent.

He emphasized that Russia insists that it allegedly supports the efforts of the militants in Donbas because it wants to protect Russian-speaking people there.

“The best thing that we could do protect people, to create security and peace would be to have a UN-mandated peacekeeping force there. That would effectively end the conflict and then create a  space where the Minsk agreements can be fully implemented,” he said.
