After the second address of the Language Ombudsman Taras Kremin to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova, Mykolaiv Administrative Court canceled the decision of Mykolaiv City Council concerning granting the status of regional language to the Russian language. This was reported on the official page of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language on Facebook.
"Finally, this unconstitutional decision, which the deputies had to reconsider within six months from the date of entry into force of the law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language", i.e. two years ago, was revoked," Taras Kremin said.
The Language Ombudsman also expressed hope that in the near future Mykolaiv deputies "will approve the city program of development of the Ukrainian language as the state language" and will make steps towards improvement of a language situation in the city. We will remind that Russian language in Mykolaiv received the status of regional language in 2012.
Taras Kremin also noted that according to the information available to the secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, decisions on the functioning of regional languages of Dnipropetrovsk and Luhansk regional councils and in some communities of Odesa and Zakarpattia regions are still in force.
