Russian language deprived of status of regional in Dnipropetrovsk region

The Dnipropetrovsk district administrative court has approved the lawsuit of the regional prosecutor’s office that asked to recognize as illicit the decision of the regional council on the provision of status of the regional to the Russian language as the decision of the court states.

In the lawsuit, the prosecutor’s office has asked the court to recognize illicit and inactive since February 28, 2018, the decision of the regional council “On support of the language policy in Ukraine” dated August 17, 2012.

On August 13, the court has filed the lawsuit. In a week, the decision was published in the register.

In the regulation, the court noted that the decision of the regional council contradicts the current law “On the provision of the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state one”.

The decision of the court can be appealed.

In July, 2021, after the second address of the Language Ombudsman Taras Kremin to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova, Mykolaiv Administrative Court canceled the decision of Mykolaiv City Council concerning granting the status of regional language to the Russian language.

As of today, the Russian language is the regional one in Luhansk and separate communities of Zakarpattia region.
