Foreign Ministry of Ukraine protested the non-fulfillment of the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea by Russia. It continues to detain illegally Ukrainian sailors captured in November 2018, in Kerch Strait as ministry reported.
Russia also offered Ukraine to participate in the criminal prosecution of the sailors according to the Russian legislation.
“On June 25, Foreign Ministry of Ukraine got the note of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation, which contains cynical offer to provide the Ukrainian side written guarantees of participation of Ukraine in the continuation of the prosecution of the Ukrainian sailors in accordance with the Russian legislation. We consider this offer of Russia unacceptable and such that exacerbates argue between Ukraine and Russia on the immunity of the vessels. The Ukrainian side has already informed the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea about it,” the ministry underlined.
Foreign Ministry of Ukraine demands to fulfill the decision of the tribunal without any conditions and release captured sailors.
“We draw attention of Kremlin, for stop of illegal prosecution of Ukrainian sailors and fulfillment of the Order of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, there are enough mechanisms existing in the Russian legislation as well as existing multilateral international treaties, which members are Ukraine and Russia. Foreign Ministry of Ukraine demands once more to urgently inform about time and place of the release and return of the vessels under control of Ukraine and time and date of the pass of 24 illegally detained members of their crews to consular officials of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
On May 25, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea obliged Russia to immediately release 24 Ukrainian sailors and three vessels, which were captured in Kerch Strait, November 2018 and provide their return to Ukraine.
We recall, on November 25, 2018, Russian border guards seized the Ukrainian Yana Kapu raid tug and small armored artillery boats Berdyansk and Nikopol of the Naval Forces of Ukraine in the Kerch Strait area, using weapons.
As a result of the incident, 24 Ukrainian sailors were detained and arrested. They were transported from Crimea to the Moscow Lefortovo detention facility. In addition, three Ukrainian sailors wounded during the shelling by the Russians were transferred to the Prison Hospital.
