Special Representative of the US State Department Kurt Volker said that Russia has not yet demonstrated the political will to end the conflict in Donbas. He stated this during his speech at the Yalta European Strategy forum, RBC-Ukraine reports.
It is mentioned that Volker also commented on the possibility of holding elections in the Donbas occupied territories.
"Free elections can only be held in an honest and free, safe environment ... Yet Russia has not demonstrated the political will to end the conflict," Special Representative of the US State Department said.
The American diplomat also emphasized that Russia tried to use the conflict to put pressure on Ukraine and Ukrainian politics, "but this does not work out."
Earlier Volker expressed hope for a further exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia.
"If there is a need for a wider format, of course, we will join it," Volker said.
Earlier, it was reported that representatives of the United States, France and Germany planned to hold consultations on the Normandy format.
It was also reported that the United States supports the efforts of the President of Ukraine to achieve peace in Donbas, and agree to take part in it, but any new format for resolving the conflict in the region needs consent of all parties.
