Kherson regional department of the National Police has launched another criminal investigation into the death of birds which are designated as endangered species in the unique nature reserve Askania-Nova. 61 sandhill cranes were found dead. Kherson regional department of the National Police reported this.

The head of the Askania-Nova reported to the head of the police station #3 in Chaplynka village that birds listed in the Red Book of Ukraine had been found dead on their territory.

Police found 61 sandhill cranes dead in the reserve. Several birds will be sent for examination to determine the cause of their death.

In total, the management of the reserve sent 13 appeals to the police to identify dead birds of various species, including those listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

Investigators of the Police Department in Chaplynka are investigating 6 criminal proceedings on the deaths of birds listed in the Red Book. All proceedings are united into one under the article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for contamination or deterioration of land.

The criminal proceedings are under the control of the regional police.

Earlier, it was reported that National Police were already looking into death of rare birds in Askania-Nova reservation. In January, the police began a pre-trial investigation of the fact of peril of 185 gray cranes in Askaniya-Nova. Then, in early March, they found out that 369 summer birds deceased in the national park. Thus, it is the third such case reported since the beginning of the year.
