The radiation background in Kyiv remains within normal limits, as the press office of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety reports.
“As a result of the fire in the exclusion zone and transferring the situation to the emergency status, the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety experts checked the indicators of the radiation background in Kyiv and got the following results: 1. Сs-137, Am-241in Kyiv during the estimated maximum of the technogenic radionuclides not found; 2. The radiation background in the checked locations is within the norm (0,1 – 0,15 mcSv/h),” the representatives of the press office reported.
It is noted that the metering was conducted using RanidSonni portable lab by air pumping through the aerosol filter. Then, the filter was measured by the spectrometer.
It was also reported that the haze created near the fire point was moving northwards, towards Belarus and Russia in the evening on May 5. For now, the direction of the wind is changing; the experts are monitoring the radiation background.
According to the State Emergency Service, the radiation level in Kyiv was 11 mcR/h, while the safe level is up to 30 mcR/h. In Chornobyl, the level of radiation remains within the norm (32 mcR/h, while safe indicator is 50 mcR/h). The radiation level on Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant industrial site is 51,6 15 mcSv/h (safe level – 140 mcR/h).
The forest fire was localized to the square in three hectares. There is no open fire, two fireplaces are smoldering – forest cover, grass, sheared trees and stumps.
150 personnel and 35 equipment units, including AN-32 aircraft and MI-8 planes, are involved in fire-fighting.
Earlier, a grass fire started in Chornobyl zone on June 5. It spread around the forest of 10 hectares. It was localized to five hectares till the morning on June 6.
The law enforcers regard arson as one of the versions - they have found torches at the site.
