Ukraine might accept 5,000 refugees from Afghanistan and spend $18.7 million of budget funds on them. The parliamentarians discussed the issue with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal during the Hour of Questions to the Government.
“As for the number of Afghan refugees, there are obviously not 5,000 of them in Ukraine today. Therefore, the right to make changes to the budget and make the final decision on the allocation or non-allocation of certain money for social, humanitarian projects, international projects belongs to the parliament, and no one in Ukraine has changed this right,” said Shmygal.
The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine really took the lead in helping and evacuating its own citizens, as well as citizens of other partner countries from Afghanistan when the crisis began there.
“Everyone knows; I will not repeat this, because military Ukrainians, Ukrainian pilots committed heroic deeds to evacuate Ukrainians and other citizens of civilized countries from Afghanistan during the crisis and during the lack of control at the airport," Shmygal added.
As it was reported earlier, due to the fact that the European Union is blocking the way for refugees to Europe through the Balkans and Italy, Afghans fleeing the Taliban regime will travel through Ukraine.
