Poroshenko stands for appointing civilian Defence Minister

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko phrased his support of the idea of appointing a civilian Minister of Defence, as he said in the press conference broadcasted by today.

“I approved the decision, that even in the times of war we must accept the appointment of a civilian Minister of Defence, separate the posts of the Commander-in-chief and the Head of the General Staff, carry out a number of small reforms in order to bring the country to the NATO standards and implement the norms that I specified in the strategic defence bulletin which was approved by the President’s order,” Poroshenko said.

It’s worth pointing out that the corresponding changes are foreseen by the draft law on national security, registered in the Parliament today, Feb. 28.

Moreover, Poroshenko noted that the command of the units of the Armed Forces in the East will be reorganized soon.
