President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has proclaimed the decade of the Ukrainian language starting from 2018. the proper order 'On urgent measures for the strengthening of the state status of the Ukrainian language and assistance in the creation of the united cultural area in Ukraine' was signed during the president's speech in Ivano-Frankivsk region as 112 Ukraine broadcasted.
'The prominent figures in the science have appealed to me that I should proclaim 2018 as a year of the Ukrainian language. I refused. Because one year is not enough to protect the language. However, I made a decision to sign an order that in 2018 we proclaim the decade of the Ukrainian language and will do everything to protect it. Today the historical event takes place here. I sign an order on the urgent measures for the strengthening of the state status of the Ukrainian language and assistance creation of the united cultural area in Ukraine', Poroshenko claimed.
The order provides the approval of the target program for 2018-2028 that aims to provide the comprehensive development and functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state in all spheres of the public life, creation of the united cultural area of Ukraine and preserving of the cultural integrity.
As we reported earlier Poroshenko claimed that he will sign an order on the work out of the ten-year program of the strengthening of the status of the Ukrainian language.
