“The introduction of norms of the law will allow preserving the ecologic safety of Ukraine and creating an effective mechanism on prevention of crimes connected to illegal deforestation,” the press service noted.
The law provides for the increase of the annual timber harvesting from 20 million to 25 million square meters.
A new article on illegal wood export (in particular, raw woods) valuable plank timber and rare woods is included in the Criminal Code. Smuggle of all these goods will be punishable by imprisonment from 3 to 5 years. If a person commits such crime for the second time or in a large amount, he/she could be imprisoned for 5 to 10 years with debarring from holding certain offices more than 3 years and with confiscation of property.
Earlier, illegal deforestation was punishable by either 30-60 dollars fine, or detention for half a year, or imprisonment for up to 3 years.
The new article sets sanction not only for deforestation but also for illegal transportation, storage, and sale of the forest.
The law also introduces increased fines for damage to forests.
Damage to the forest by sewage, chemicals, petroleum products, and harmful emissions can cost 18-54 dollars for citizens and 90-150 UAH for officials (previously - 6-18 dollars for citizens and 18-30 dollars for officials).
The fine of 6-18 dollars for citizens and 18-30 dollars for officials is foreseen not only for damage to forests in settlements but also outside of them.
