Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Vilnius presented the Lithuanians with the Order of Freedom for their contribution to the development of Ukrainian-Lithuanian interstate relations and assistance to Ukraine. Poroshenko awarded the Order in the Greek Catholic Church during a meeting with the Ukrainian community. The ceremony was broadcasted by 112 Ukraine TV channel.
Poroshenko said that he awards "the great sons of the Lithuanian people who have done so much for the establishment, revival and development of the Ukrainian state."
Poroshenko thanked Lithuanian people and Ukrainian community for helping Ukraine.
"The first weapon after the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014 came to Ukraine from Lithuania, and the first humanitarian aid also. Lithuania was the first to receive the injuried, and the signing of an association with the EU was to be held in Lithuania. And today it is the most reliable ally, a reliable advocate which gave Ukraine the opportunity to say the final "goodbye" to the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire and return through a visa-free regime in the EU, "Poroshenko said.
As it was reported earlier the government of Lithuania accepted the decision on donating almost 2 million euro worth of weapons to Ukraine.
Previously it was informed that Lithuania was considering passing to Ukraine roughly 7,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles, over 2 million cartridges, about 80 machineguns, several mortars, anti-tank weapons and other kinds of weaponry.
Lithuania first sent weapons to Ukraine in 2014. Raimundas Karoblis, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania said that Lithuania would continue such support as possible.
