Poroshenko presents bill on termination of Treaty of Friendship with Russia to Parliament

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko registered the bill No. 0206 on termination of Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Russia and Ukraine in the Parliament.

At the meeting of the Parliament’s conciliation board, Iryna Lutsenko, the President’s Representative to the Verkhovna Rada, expressed hope that the MPs would support such initiative in compliance with the procedure.

The Verkhovna Rada ratified the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia in January, 1998. The document embodied the principles of a strategic cooperation, recognized the inviolability of the existing borders, respect of the territorial integrity and contained a reciprocal obligation not to use the territory at the cost of the security of each other.

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council approved the initiative of President Petro Poroshenko, who offered to discontinue the Treaty on Friendship, Partnership, and Cooperation with the Russian Federation for ten years-long period.
