Poroshenko, OSCE Secretary General coordinate approaches to deploying UN peacekeepers in Donbas

The president emphasized the importance of establishing an intensive dialogue between the OSCE and the UN on this issue

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and newly appointed OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger discussed the initiative to introduce UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas in their meeting in Kyiv, according to the press service of Ukraine’s president.

“The parties coordinated approaches to deploying UN peacekeepers all over occupied Donbas. Petro Poroshenko emphasized the importance of establishing an intensive dialogue between the OSCE and the UN on this issue,” the statement says.

The interlocutors also discussed the activity of the SMM OSCE and the necessity to strengthen mission’s field work. Ukrainian President addressed the OSCE Secretary General with a request to assist in giving the SMM equipment needed to enhance the quality of everyday work of the observers. The importance of full and unhindered access of the SMM OSCE to all temporarily occupied territory of Donbas, including the uncontrolled part of Russian-Ukrainian border, was also emphasized.

Poroshenko informed the Secretary General about the situation in Donbas, implementation of the Minsk agreements, and outlined his view on the strategy of de-occupying Crimea.

President of Ukraine also called on Greminger to use all available to the OSCE means to release Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia and Crimea, as well as the hostages kept by occupant forces in Donbas.

As it was reported earlier,  Vladimir Putin instructed the Russian Foreign Ministry to introduce the draft resolution to the UN Security Council, as he believes such a mission could help resolve the conflict, even though previously Russian officials disapproved of the idea. Ukraine phrased its opinion on the subjectm saying that it objects to having peacekeepers from Russia participating in the UN mission.
