Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine met Oleksandr Abramenko, the champion of 2018 Winter Olympics in freestyle skiing. The Head of State handed the athlete and Enver Ablaev, the main coach of the National Team of Ukraine in freestyle skiing the state awards – orders ‘For services’ of the third degree. The press service of the Ukrainian president reported this on March 1.
It is noted that the athletes awarded for ‘the achievement of the top sports results at 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, dedication, will to win and confirmation of the international authority of Ukraine’.
‘My sincere congratulations. It is just a reward. You did more than many others for the popularization of our state and I congratulate you on this deserved victory’, Poroshenko said.
He also thanked Abramenko's coach.
‘Ukraine did not get the Olympic medals for a long time. I think it is a victory that we dreamt of and, to be honest, we did not believe to win the gold’, the president added.
Abramenko said that the International Olympic Committee asked him to provide one of the skis with which he won with the sign for the museum in Lausanne.
‘I felt very excited. It was like a dream for me. But I was very glad to win and bring the first gold medal for Ukraine in freestyle skiing’, the athlete said.
Also, the president handed Abramenko the certificate for an apartment.
According to the athlete, his own apartment was his second dream after the winning in the Olympics and he promised to invite the Head of the State for the house-warming.
In his turn, Abramenko handed Poroshenko with the souvenir, the symbol of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Moreover, he became the first man who won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in memory of independent Ukraine.
