Pope Francis welcomed the exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia. Pontiff stated this during the traditional Sunday sermon, as Radio of Vatican informed.

"The exchange took place between Russia and Ukraine last week. I'm glad for the released people who could hug their relatives again and continue praising for ending of the conflict and lasting peace," the Pope said.

As it was reported earlier, the exchange of captives "35 on 35" took place last week. 24 Ukrainian sailors and 11 political prisoners - already ex-political prisoners - captured by Russia over the past five years, returned to Ukraine. Filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, left activist Oleksandr Kolchenko, journalist Roman Sushchenko, Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov, and the rest of former captives were released from Russian jails and brought to Kyiv.

Ukrainian aircraft left Vnukovo airport, carrying Ukrainian citizens that are due to prisoner swap with Russia. At the same time, Russia's Tupolev Tu-204 left Boryspil airport, taking Russian prisoners to Moscow.
