Police passes 17 cases on crimes against journalists to court

The National Police sent 17 criminal proceedings regarding crimes against journalists to the court during the nine months of 2021 as the police reported.

It is noted, 11 of these proceedings were opened due to obstruction of legal professional activity.

As of September 30, the police are investigating 172 criminal cases (taking into account the initiated cases in previous years). Moreover, during 2021, two criminal offenses were reported to persons on suspicion, including three in the Odesa region, two in Kyiv, Volyn, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, and one in Lviv and Kharkiv. Another six proceedings were opened due to threat of violence against a journalist, including two in the Poltava region, one in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Lviv, and Cherkasy regions.

According to the Chief Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine, 158 criminal proceedings were opened in 2021; 113 of them were opened due to the intentional destruction or damage to the property of a journalist.

“69 criminal offenses were closed, the preliminary investigation of which began in 2021, and 57 in previous years. The decision to close it has been agreed with the prosecutor's office,” the department said.

On October 4, reporters of the Schemes project were attacked in the office of Ukreximbank during the interview with the bank’s head Yevhen Metzger in his office. The bank employees used physical force against the Schemes cameraman, took away two cameras from him, and removed the recorded video.
