Bark beetle damaged 7 thousand hectares of forest in Volyn region. The focus of the disease was found in the Manevychi district. This issue was discussed during an open seminar on the state of forest vegetation, according to information department of the state regional administration.
Having inspected the affected areas, seminar participants came to the conclusion that ecological catastrophe can reach all-Ukraine scale. In this regard it is necessary to act consolidated and quickly at all levels.
"The problem becomes very pressing, it has now the character of an emergency situation, therefore, it is necessary to activate all our potential - both on the level of authorities and professional, in order to stop the pest even just a little," said Tetiana Kasich, director of the specialized forestry enterprise Kherson Forest protection.
Due to damage to the forest, regional forestry management department is forced to stop the main forest use in order to solve the problem of bark-fungal shrinkage. Now 7 thousand hectares of forest have already been damaged, and for the autumn-winter period another 2-3 thousand hectares could be damaged. Therefore, sanitary deforestation is inevitable and moreover, it is quite possible that it will have to be increased several times.
Scientists present at the seminar note that coroid damage is a problem not only of Volhyn and even of Ukraine. Similar disease areas were found in Poland and Belarus. In the last two months ago, they decided to completely stop all forest cut and before September 5 to conduct a full sweep of local forests from the damaged timber.
Bark beetles have a concealed way of life besides, experts cannot predict the radius and vector of their spread. But Volhyn specialists managed to identify seven species of pests that live on one tree and each of them has its own zone of destruction.
It is noted that 10 years ago pests could not withstand low temperatures and died. Now they have immunity and after several hours of stay in a warm environment they are able to restore their vital functions.
In order to prevent the loss of hundreds of thousands hectares of forest, forestry departments will prepare an appeal to the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine and to introduce amendments to the law that will allow influencing the situation and reduce the zone of damage.
Also, in the near future, Volyn Region Directorate of Forestry and Hunting should present for the deputies’ consideration the program for Volhyn forests conservation, with a detailed justification of the need for urgent measures funds, as well as for afforestation of areas damaged by pests.
