Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has increased the number of members of the Central Election Commission from 15 to 17 people. 236 people's deputies supported the decision during the session on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.
The bill provides for a unified amendment to the Law "On the Central Election Commission" - increase in the number of members of the Central Election Commission from 15 to 17 people. The author of the legislative initiative is a Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy. In the morning, he substantiated his position, stressing that such a decision unlocks the process of changing the composition of the CEC, and the number 15 has once been taken from similar norms in the Russian Federation, and has no fundamental significance.
The Central Election Commission in Ukraine consists of 15 people. Only two people have the authority in the current Central Election Commission, - Oleh Didenko and Kateryna Makhnitska. And it will be so until April 2021. The term of office of the other thirteen members has long passed.
The President submitted 14 candidates and there are 13 vacant seats. Therefore, the CEC composition could not be changed during the last session of the Parliament.
As it was reported earlier, the terms of office of CEC members have long expired. The fourth year of promises, mutual accusations, and even persuasions on the part of European partners… And it looks like the main political players, Bloc of Petro Poroshenko (BPP) and National Front, do not need the re-appointment of the CEC. First, the president of Ukraine submits a list according to which the overwhelming majority of future members belong to his sphere of influence, ignoring the candidates from all the other political factions. The result was obvious - the vote did not take place.
