The educational process will start in schools in September. The Ministry of Education promises to make every effort to ensure that children can attend classes regardless of the epidemiological situation. But the pandemic still makes adjustments both in the educational process itself and in its organization.

There are three scenarios for the beginning of the school year

The study in Ukrainian schools will begin on September 1 as usual. In other words, children will physically attend classes. Education in the remote mode or in mixed format is possible only in schools that are in the “yellow”, “orange” or “red” zones. But the Ministry of Health would like schools to be able to work normally in this case as well - they promise to vaccinate 80% of teachers by the beginning of September.

The first scenario is the most favorable. If a “green” quarantine zone is established throughout Ukraine, all schools will operate normally. Distant learning will be possible only by the decision of the Pedagogical Councils in some regions if there are outbreaks.

In the second scenario, the” yellow” or “orange” quarantine zones are established. In this case, local authorities will be able to transfer students to distant learning. But at the same time, if 80% of teachers are vaccinated, schools will be able to work normally.

The third scenario is a pessimistic one. In case of a high level of morbidity and, accordingly, a “red” quarantine zone, the Ministry of Education will insist that students in grades 1-4 continue to study normally, but only if 80% of teachers are vaccinated.

But all these plans are relevant only for the beginning of the educational process, for the September-October period of time. Today we already see an increase in the incidence of Covid-19, and a new outbreak is possible in the winter, according to the Ministry of Health. In this case, the format of the learning process will be adjusted.

Moreover, southern regions of Ukraine want to postpone the beginning of the school year from September 1 to September 20 to extend the holiday season and thus improve the economic situation in the regions. But so far no such decisions have been made.

How children will attend school

The Ministry of Education says that the school year can start with the traditional lines, but the celebration should be short. However, the decision whether to celebrate or not will be made directly in each school. The administration will also consider the possibility of parents visiting the school.

Students of 1-4 grades will attend classes without masks. High school students will have to wear masks only during breaks.

As usual, students will have four holiday periods. Autumn holidays will last from October 25 to October 31, 2021, winter holidays - from December 25, 2021, to January 9, 2022, spring holidays - from March 28 to April 3, 2022, and summer holidays - from June 1 to August 31, 2022.

However, the dates of school holidays will depend on the epidemiological situation and may vary.

In conclusion, the school year will begin on September 1, 2021, and end no later than July 1, 2022. The duration of holidays during the school year will be at least 30 calendar days. There should be at least 720 teaching hours in the primary school (grades 1-4), 890 teaching hours in the gymnasium (grades 5-9), and 1,100 teaching hours in the lyceum (grades 10-12).
