Prosecutor's Office of Panama closed the criminal case on the claim of lawyer Andriy Portnov, finding no reason to prosecute the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko. Poroshenko's lawyer Ilya Novikov has informed about it, Interfax reports.
"On October 3, 2019, Panama's First Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime decided to close the case issued following Mr. Andriy Portnov's claim against Poroshenko ... The claim contained information about the companies, allegedly affiliated with Poroshenko, which were legalizing the proceeds of crime," Novikov said.
According to him, Portnov's personal testimony was added to the claim, and he insisted that Panama's Prosecutor's office should investigate the alleged crime.
"The information provided by Portnov was checked, and two months were enough for the prosecutor to understand the contents of this case. And it was decided to close the case," Novikov added.
He also noted that the decision was based on the fact that Ukraine is investigating criminal proceedings opened following Portnov's claim, and also stated that it did not contain facts that would indicate the companies' involvement in any illegal activities.
