During the celebration of Rosh Hashanah by Jewish pilgrims in Uman, the police of Cherkasy region will work in enhanced regime: over 500 police officers will provide law and order as the Interior Ministry of Ukraine reported.
“The provision of the public security of the citizens during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah in terms of the current epidemiological situation was discussed during the offsite meeting of deputy chair of the National Police of Ukraine Oleksandr Fatsevych and Deputy Health Minister Viktor Lyashko,” the message said.
It is noted that the representatives of the National Police and the Health Ministry held the coordination meeting with the local heads of the healthcare, law enforcement bodies and representatives of the religious community of Hasidim concerning the plan of events and preparation for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah in Uman.
According to Oleksandr Fatsevych, about 50 Hasidim pilgrims stay in Uman. Over 500 police officers will provide law and order in the city.
“Cherkasy police ready to provide the public law and order in Uman. Currently, the law enforcers serve in an enhanced regime. They are provided with all technical capacities for control and provision of security during the events. It is important that all our citizens and pilgrims strictly comply with anti-epidemical measures and celebrate Rosh Hashanah holiday calmly and in safety,” the deputy chair of the National Police of Ukraine reported.
The places of worship of pilgrimage, feeding areas of citizens and territories of holding of events were inspected for their readiness to host visitors and clear observation of quarantine restrictions.
On August 17, the Cabinet of Ministers and State Commission on human-generated environmental disasters and the emergency situations banned Hasidim pilgrims to visit Uman in 2020.
Earlier, Mayor of Uman Oleksandr Tsebriy stood against the arrival of Hasidim in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“The government predicts the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic exactly for September. That is why I stand against the visit of our city by the pilgrims this year,” Tsebriy stated.
Uman Mayor specified that he was ready to block the roads not to allow the arrival of Hasidim pilgrims for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah due to the situation with coronavirus.
Besides, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine formed the view that the arrival of the dozens of thousand of Hasidim-pilgrims in Uman for the celebration of Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah in the traditional format this year is impossible.
Later, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine stated that there is no official ban from the Ukrainian authorities for the arrival of Hasidim pilgrims in Uman.
