Trinity Day is one of the main Christian holidays. It is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter and in 2021, it is marked on June 20.
The history and traditions of Trinity
The holiday symbolizes the descent of the Holy Spirit to the apostles promised by Jesus Christ before the Ascension. The descent of the Holy Spirit pointed to the Trinity, after which people started to glorify hypostases — the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. Holiday officially entered the Christian calendar only at the end of the IV century, when the Church adopted the doctrine on Trinity at the First Council of Constantinople in 381.
This day, the orthodox churches serve one of the most solemn services. The churches and houses are decorated with branches of trees, plants, and flowers. People usually bring flowers to churches. The green is the symbolical color of the holiday; the color of life, spiritual revival. The priests wear green sacred vestments on Trinity.
It is used to hold thorough cleaning, cook food and invite guests to Trinity. The table should be decorated with a vase with flowers and baked goods, most often korovai, should be on the table.
The Christian practices of the Trinity became entangled with the Slavonic, embodying many superstitions. It is considered that a person cannot think about bad things, feel aggrieved on this day, as well as a person should be in harmony with God and nature. Besides, it is considered that summer comes with the Trinity.
It is not recommended to hold weddings and marriage ceremony on this holiday; meanwhile, matchmaking considered to be a good sign. People believed that if matchmaking takes place on the Trinity and the couple gets married on the Intercession of the Theotokos, the life of the couple will be long, happy, in love and consent.
Besides, it is not allowed to swim in rivers and lakes as the mythical beings such as mavka and rusalka come on this day. Meanwhile, people did a circle dance near the water while young women collected herbs, field flowers, and made wreaths.
On this day, the church does not recommend to hold agriculture works. Especially, it was banned to cut down trees or mow the grass. People also believed that it is raining on the Trinity, a good harvest is expected.
