The order of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on the decision of the National Security and Defense Council dated September 2018 "On Treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russian Federation" was published at Uryadovy Kuryer.
According to the proper order signed by the Ukrainian leader on September 17, it comes into force since the day it was published.
Earlier, the President Petro Poroshenko introduced the decision of NSDC on termination of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia.
As the president’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada Iryna Lutsenko noted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will inform Russia before September 30, and Poroshenko will introduce the bill to the parliament.
In its turn, Russia regretted Ukraine’s intentions to terminate the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership.
As it was reported earlier, the Ukraine-Russia Friendship Treaty of 1998 fixed the principle of strategic partnership, the recognition of the inviolability of existing borders, respect for territorial integrity and mutual commitment not to use its territory to harm the security of each other. The treaty automatically renews on each 10th anniversary of its signing, unless one party advises the other of its intention to end the treaty.
Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council approved the initiative of President Petro Poroshenko, who offered to discontinue the Treaty on Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation with the Russian Federation for ten years-long period.
