'It is not only the largest infrastructure project implemented in our country during the last decades. It is a project through which Ukraine becomes closer to the EU and the EU to Ukraine. It is a part of the international transport corridor that runs through Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and to the east. 40% of the transit shipments to Western and Central Europe passes this tunnel', the president noted.
Poroshenko called Beskydy Tunnel the symbol of the large-scale renewal of the country and pass to the stable development.
Beskydy Railway Tunnel is situated in the Carpathian Mountains, at Beskidy Pass. It is the fifth Pan-European corridor (Italy – Slovenia – Hungary – Slovakia – Ukraine). it is expected that after the finish of the building of the double-track tunnel it will pass up to 100 pairs of the trains per day. The speed of the trains will increase from 15-40 to 60-70 kilometers per hour.
In 2006 Ukrainian Railways announced the tender for the reconstruction of the tunnel. The preparation works began in 2011 and in 2013 the project of the tunnel was approved. In October 2017 the finish of the tunnel's construction was announced.
It is planned to open new Beskydy Railway Tunnel on May 25, 2018.
