The deputy of Odesa regional council tried to give a bribe of 500,000 dollars to the officer of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine. The deputy was pressed charges, as press service the bureau reported.
"The illegal benefit to the NABU officer was offered in exchange for the removal of arrest of the accounts of a private company involved, according to the investigation, in a corrupt scheme aiming to seize the budget of Odesa city. This refers to money received from the sale to Odesa city council of the building at inflated prices,” the message says.
It is noted that the deputy of Odesa regional council was pressed charges under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (proposal, promise or provision of improper benefit to official). At the moment, the issue of electing a preventive measure to the deputy is being decided.
The mentioned building was sold for 140,560 dollars in early 2016 as part of the integral property complex of the state enterprise Kraian Zavod. But in September of the same year, Odesa city council bought it for 6,5 million dollars.
As it was reported earlier in spring of 2017, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau under the procedural supervision of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office conducted searches in Odesa over the suspicious purchase of the Kraian Zavod.
Also, it was earlier noted that the pressure on anti-corruption bodies may seriously influence the reputation of Ukraine, which the country was forming over the past few years, according to the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Ukraine Judith Gough. She added that Ukraine won’t receive investment without an effective fight against corruption.
