Operation of Normandy contact group should be continued until full ceasefire is reached in Donbas. This was reported by Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, during Munich Security Conference broadcast by "112 Ukraine" TV channel.
"Unfortunately, not al of the provisions of Minsk agreement are implemented, but the work is ongoing and we have to continue. We must reach extended ceasefire in Donbas," Merkel said.
"Minsk agreement is the only thing we have to continue dialogue and creating opportunities to solve problems. We should use what we have if there is no alternative. I still have a hope," she added.
At the same time, German Chancellor stressed that NATO significance rose after Crimean situation and escalation in Eastern Ukraine.
"NATO plays important role after annexation of Crimea and hostilities in Eastern Ukraine. So why activity in Ukraine leads us to embarrassment and concern? The principle of territorial integrity is being violated, it had been violated already," Merkel noted.
Merkel also announced there were no formal basis to realize the political part of Minsk agreement to settle situation in Eastern Ukraine.
"I realize there are two major problems in this situation. Minsk agreement assumed we would take all necessary political measures after ceasefire is established. But we did not manage to provide ceasefire more than 3-4 days. So, speaking from a formal point of view, we cannot start political process now," she said during MSC on Saturday.
