The new Supreme Court starts working in Ukraine today. The day was chosen as it’s the 100-year anniversary since the day of the foundation of the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

Today the old Supreme Court, Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine, Supreme Economic Court of Ukraine, and the High Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases stop operating, handing over their authority to the Supreme Court.

According to the law on the structure of court and status of judges, taking into account the amendments that come to force today, Dec. 15th, the Supreme Court is the only court of cassation in Ukraine.

The Supreme Court is the highest court in Ukrainian judicial system. It’s a cassation body, while in certain cases – it’s the court of the first instance or the court of appeals. It analyzes the judicial statistics, generalizes the court practices, addressed the Constitutional Court as to whether a certain law corresponds to the Constitution and as to the official interpretation of the Constitution. Moreover, the Supreme Court renders its decision on the presence or absence of a treason in the actions of the President of Ukraine, and it can, after being addressed by the Parliament, submit a statement on the President’s inability to perform the duties due to the health condition.
