Ukraine’s National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting decided to hold an unscheduled inspection of NewsOne TV channel over the statement of the TV channel to conduct a telethon with Russian TV channel “Russia 1”, which is banned in Ukraine, as Deputy Head of the regulator Ulyana Feshchuk and members of the Council Segiy Kostinsky said, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting supports the call of Ukraine’s Security Service to initiate convocation of the extraordinary meeting of National Security and Defence Council over NewsOne intentions to hold telethon with “Russia 1”.
“We initiate an unscheduled inspection of the TV channel… including over the statements revealed in the announcement of the planned telethon with the Russian TV channel where Ukrainians were called fascists multiple times. If we prove the fact of provoking dissension, this would be the second sanctions against the TV channel which allows us to appeal to the court concerning revocation of a license,” Kostinsky said.
At the same time, he noted that unfortunately, the current law provides for a complicated procedure on concerning revocation of broadcasters’ license, even after multiple violations of the Ukrainian legislation.
According to Kostinsky, “it’s time for stronger measures towards those who rouses national hatred” on their airs.
“We have warned the TV channel multiple times and we see that violations continue,” Kostinsky noted.
The representatives of the National Council stated that the state regulator appealed to SBU over TV channel’s violations of Ukraine’s legislation.
Prosecutor Generals’ Office of Ukraine (GPU) registered a criminal proceeding on an attempt to commit the state treason due to the plans of the Ukrainian TV channel NewsOne to hold telecast with the Russian TV channel.
